Preparing Your Car for Colder Weather with Jaguar of Naperville

September 27th, 2021 by

There are a lot of things that need to be done to prepare for the colder weather that’s coming for Chicagoland. Don’t neglect your car for the upcoming fall and winter seasons. Car maintenance is incredibly important year-round, but especially in the cold that’s bound to hit the Midwest region. In our first blog of the month, we’ve outlined three important things to check as the leaves change colors

  1. Check your battery

Did you know that car batteries tend to die in colder weather due to the strain that the cold puts on them? Don’t get stranded with a dead battery this winter, get your battery checked and possibly replaced before the cold comes. If necessary, you can even purchase a battery tester to determine how much life your battery has left.

  1. Check your tires

If you didn’t know, tire pressure can really drop in colder weather with every 10-degree reduction in temperature leading to tires losing one PSI of air. Typically, tire pressure is recommended to be around 30-35 PSI. When tires are not properly inflated it can affect gas mileage and tire wear as well. It’s important to monitor your tires as much as you can with a tire pressure gauge as well.

  1. Change your wiper blades

Colder and even sub-freezing temperatures can cause the rubber on some windshield wiper blades to become brittle and break. It’s recommended that you consider changing out your wiper blades for ones that are made for harsher climates. However, you can also just make sure that the ones you have are not too old and worn. It is recommended to replace your wiper blades every six months, but those recommendations also can vary based on your manufacturer’s guide.
